Real-Time Tone Mapping: A Survey and Cross-Implementation Hardware Benchmark

The rising demand for high quality display has ensued active research in dynamic range (HDR) imaging, which the potential to replace standard imaging. This is due HDR's features like accurate reproducibility of a scene with its entire spectrum visible lighting and color depth. But this capability comes expensive capture, display, storage distribution resource requirements. Also, HDR images/video content on an ordinary device limited requires some form adaptation. Many adaptation algorithms, widely known as tone mapping operators, have been studied proposed last few decades. In state art report, we present comprehensive survey 50+ algorithms that implemented hardware acceleration real-time performance. These adapted or redesigned make them hardware-friendly. All application poses strict timing constraints time exact processing algorithm. design challenge require novel solution, report focus these issues. will discuss those tonemap GPU [1-10], FPGA [11-41], ASIC [42-53] terms their specifications Output image important metric algorithms. From our literature found that, various objective metrics used demonstrate functionality adapting algorithm platform. We compiled all [54-67]. Finally, link between cost thereby illustrating underlying trade-off be useful community.
